George Nelson Simcox was born in Elkhart, Indiana on May 9,
1933 to George Washington Simcox and Ruth Alene Wade. In
1946 the Simcox family moved to San Francisco, California,
where he graduated from Polytechnic High School in 1951.
George joined the Army, graduating from Officer Candidate
School and served in France for three years. Upon his return he
was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and took a wife,
Norma Saure Simcox on August 2, 1958. His family grew to four
with the addition of George Patton and Robert Dean. George also
served in Korea, Hawaii, Vietnam, and lastly Fort Belvoir, Vir-
ginia. During his service George received his Masters degree from
George Washington University. On April 30, 1973, at the rank of
Lieutenant Colonel, he retired as Deputy Commander of the
Engineer Topographic Laboratory, which later became Topo-
graphic Engineering Center. After working five years in private
industry for the Planning Research Corporation, he re-entered
government service as a civilian and worked at TEC/ETL for 17
more years before retiring again in 1995. In July 2000, his wife of
42 years passed away from ovarian cancer. He is survived by his
mother and two sons.
The Aikido Experience
George first became interested in Aikido in 1966 while he served
in Hawaii. In 1975, he joined a Reston, Virginia Aikido dojo of
Sensei Kirk Fowler. After the departure of the Sensei Fowler, the
Virginia Ki Society was founded where George has been Sensei
and Chief Instructor until his passing. He achieved the rank of 6th
dan in Shinshin Toitsu Aikido.
